Bond Memories 12 – Rare Footage of “The Spy Who Loved Me” Premiere

This kinescope was recorded from a PAL 3/4″ tape from 1977, and we’ve never shown a bit of it….until now. Is it new to you? Should we get Richard Kiel a copy? Do you want to see more?
“The Spy Who Loved Me” had not one original thought in its head – but that was okay. It was a PURE Bond film, as it could not exist as something else….and brother, could we use another one now!

That’s an amazing clip. So interesting to see it.

More more more! TSWLM is my favourite film, came along at a very impressionable age, and there is so much lost info lurking in EONs archives, in that pre-home video pre-digital age. Just today found a promo shot of Caroline Munro on the Wetbike, never seen that in 35 years. The Bond premieres were an event in themselves, one I did record was the For Yor Eyes Only version, complete with Judith Chalmers et al

Hi There – I’ve been looking for footage like this for months – I’m working on the official 50th anniversary Bond documentary. Can you let me know where you got this from? The British guy doing the interview is Pete Murray but this was not shown on British TV – any help much appreciated? Paul

      Hi Paul,
In 1977 I was working for a videocassette duplicating house, and a 3/4″ PAL tape came in for an NTSC xfer. Back in the day at our place, the only was we could do that was to shoot the PAL video off a TV screen(!), and that’s what I did. Naturally, being a life long Bond fan, I kept a copy (as poor as it came out) for myself. I have never shared it, or sold it, etc. and the YouTube clip is the only time I have presented it to the outside world. It’s around 45 minutes long, and it would be my pleasure to donate it to the 50th Bond anniversary. My wife & I worked on the Bond laserdiscs in 1995, and the DVD releases in 1999 shooting interviews, etc. Let us know if we can help in any way!
      best,
      Paul
